Alarm Card
A complete Alarm Card for AM-650 alarm AM-3021, what each of its sections captures, and how to build one from handwritten tech notes with the InSkill Field Card Creator skill.
An Alarm Card covers one alarm or HMI error code: what it means, what usually causes it in the field, how to clear it, and what to do when it comes back. It starts from the code and text the Technician sees on the display, so InSkill GPT can match the card to the alarm the moment it is reported. For how Alarm Cards fit with the other card types, see Field Cards.
This page shows a complete Alarm Card, explains what each section captures, and then shows how to create one with the InSkill Field Card Creator skill.
NoteThe example is built from fictional AZ Copper Works records and the AZ Machine Works AM-650 manuals. Its pictures are illustrations marked For demo purposes only.

What Each Section Covers
An Alarm Card leads with the alarm exactly as the display shows it, then explains it before telling the Technician what to do.
| Section | What it captures | In this example |
|---|---|---|
| Header and summary box | The customer logo, card type, card ID and chips. When to use lists the alarm code, its levels and the display message, so InSkill GPT finds the card from any of them. | Alarm card; AM-3021 amber, AM-3021 red, "Reduce speed / select a lower gear". |
| 1 Alarm text and code | The code, its level, the exact display text, when it sets and how the machine responds, from the maker's fault code reference. | AM-3021, amber or red; sets above 240 °F for 10 s; red above 265 °F (SM page 38). |
| 2 Meaning | What the alarm is telling you, in plain words: the system behind it and what normal looks like. | Brake cooling oil comes from the hoist pump through the open center of the hoist valve; a lever out of the FLOAT detent cuts the flow. |
| 3 Safety and preconditions | What to do immediately, and how to make the machine safe for the checks. | Follow the CD-7 on a red alarm; hot brake housings; lock out before changing the filter. |
| 4 Causes: most common first | The core expertise: the causes the field actually found, each with the check that finds it, the action, and Seen. The most frequent cause comes first. | EHL out of the FLOAT detent (seen 3), service brakes instead of the retarder (2), a plugged brake cooling filter (1), packed cooler fins (1). |
| 5 How to clear | The steps to bring the alarm down and when to clear the code. | Reduce speed, put the lever in FLOAT, use the retarder; clear codes only after a full haul cycle. |
| 6 Verification | How to prove the alarm is fixed. | Brake oil below 240 °F through a haul cycle; TP-7 40 to 90 psi; sensor within 15 °F of an infrared reading. |
| 7 If not resolved | The workaround, the less common causes to check, and what to bring when escalating. | Dragging rear brake check; sensor replacement; escalate with HaulTrak speed-by-grade and readings. |
| 8 Figures | Pictures of the display, the controls and the parts involved. | The CD-7 alarm, the EHL in HOLD and in FLOAT, the test panel, clean and packed cooler fins. |
| 9 Field notes and 10 To be confirmed | The dated evidence, and the gaps to close before the card is verified. | Seven alarms on MY2025 and MY2022 trucks; the CD-7 red-alarm behavior is not in the manuals. |
| Legend, keywords and sources | Value tags, keywords and slang, and sources. | Keywords include "hot brakes" and "brake temp high". |
Example Questions
These questions were asked in Ask on Copilot (Truck) with the card uploaded, and InSkill GPT answered them correctly. Use them to check the card after you upload it.
| Ask this | A good answer covers |
|---|---|
| "AM-3021 came up on the haul road descent. What do I do?" | Reduce speed and select a lower gear; check the EHL is in the FLOAT detent; use the retarder and engine brake, not the service brakes; if the alarm returns, park the truck and work through the causes. |
| "At what temperature does AM-3021 come on?" | Amber when the cooling return oil is above 240 °F (116 °C) for 10 s; red above 265 °F. |
| "How can I tell if a rear wet brake is dragging?" | After a drive with no braking, a wet brake housing more than 30 °F hotter than the others has a dragging pack. Check its piston return and that rear apply pressure returns to 0 psi. |
How to Create an Alarm Card
Alarm Cards are created in Claude with the InSkill Field Card Creator skill. It takes the alarm definition from the maker's fault code reference and the causes from the records, ordered by how often each one was found.
Follow these five stages in order:
Gather the source data
Collect every record of the alarm: operator reports, tech notes, telematics or HMI alarm history, and work orders. Add the maker's fault code reference and the diagnostic procedure for the alarm.
The source for this example is a page of handwritten tech notes:

Handwritten tech notes page (fictional demo data)
The skill reads the handwriting and gives every entry a source ID:
| Handwritten entry | Source ID | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| 7/15 B43558 RT: AM-3021 on Ramp 4, 248°F, lever in HOLD | E0007 | Cause 1, field notes |
| 7/29 B43113 RT: no fault, service brakes, no retarder | E0013 | Cause 2 |
| 8/12 B43558 RT: 244°F, hand resting on the EHL | E0018 | Cause 1 |
| 9/2 B43558 AL: TP-7 = 112 psi, new filter, 66 psi | E0027 | Cause 3 |
| 9/18 B43558 DR: cooler fins packed after a dust storm | E0033 | Cause 4 |
Two more records came from the typed field log:
id,date,shift,unit,tech,area,entry
E0023,2026-08-24,Day,B43113,RT,Brakes,"AM-3021 red, 268 F, on the loaded haul to Dump 1. EHL out of the FLOAT detent. Operator stopped as instructed by the CD-7 and let the oil cool. Lever returned to FLOAT; operator briefed."
E0031,2026-09-14,Night,B43113,RT,Brakes,"AM-3021 amber on the Ramp 2 descent. HaulTrak speed-by-grade showed service brake use instead of the retarder. Operator coached."The manuals used were the AMW-SM-650-25 Service Manual (brake cooling on page 14, the AM-3021 procedure on page 34, and the fault code on page 38) and the AMW-MP-650-25 Maintenance and Parts Manual (test panel on page 35, parts on page 56).
Run the skill
In Claude, attach the notes, the field log, the manuals and the customer logo, and use a prompt like this:
Use the InSkill Field Card Creator skill.
Create an alarm card for AM-3021 Brake Cooling Oil Temperature High on the AMW
AM-650 haul truck.
- Copilot: Copilot (Truck)
- Site: AZ Copper Works (prefix ACW)
- Keep the card generic to the AM-650: no unit numbers; note model-year differences
- Source: the attached handwritten tech notes and field log, July to September 2026
- Take the alarm text, set condition and response from the fault code reference in
the attached AMW-SM-650-25 Service Manual, and cite the page
- Order the causes by how often each appears in the records
- Header: the attached AZ Machine Works logoReview the card
Before you upload the card, check:
- Every page reads cleanly, no heading is stranded at the bottom of a page, and the card ID fits the header.
- Every field value appears in the source records, and every source ID on the card exists.
- Every value taken from the manual cites its page.
- The To be confirmed list names every gap, and who should close it.
- The settings file has InSkill GPT Answers, App and Web all on.
Upload to InSkill
Field cards are uploaded with InSkill GPT Answers, App and Web all on. With App and Web off, InSkill GPT still uses a card, but doesn't show it as a resource in the answer.
- Open the copilot, here Copilot (Truck), and open its Resources tab.
- Click Bulk Upload and add the PDF.
- Under Configure defaults for uploaded files, leave Published on. Under Visibility, leave App, Web and InSkill GPT Answers selected. Under InSkill GPT, leave Searchable and Parse selected.
- Click Create 1 Resources, then Done.
- Open the new resource and set Name, Keywords and Description from the settings file. Leave Prompt empty. Click Save. See Editing Resource Attributes.
NoteClaude can do step 5 for you through the InSkill MCP Server: ask it to apply the
.inskill.jsonsettings file to the uploaded resource.
In this example the resource name is Field Card (Alarm) | AM-3021 Brake cooling oil temperature high.
Test the card in Ask
Ask the example questions in Ask on the copilot and check the answers against the card.
Output Reference
Files
The skill writes two files for each card:
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
ACW-AZMachineWorks-AM650-Truck-E-001-EN.pdf | The card: a branded, US Letter PDF. This is the file you upload to InSkill. |
ACW-AZMachineWorks-AM650-Truck-E-001-EN.inskill.json | The settings file: the resource name, keywords, description and visibility to apply in InSkill. |
The skill writes the card in English, even when the source records are in another language. It writes another language version, for example ACW-AZMachineWorks-AM650-Truck-E-001-ES.pdf, only when you ask for one. On request, it also delivers a kit with the template, builder, content files and images, so the card can be rebuilt after edits.
Card ID
Every card ID follows the pattern <Site>-<Brand>-<Model>-<MachineType>-<Code>-<Number>, and each language version adds a suffix:
| Part | In this example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Site | ACW | AZ Copper Works, the site the records come from |
| Brand | AZMachineWorks | The machine maker. Process is used when the maker can't be confirmed from the sources. |
| Model | AM650 | The machine model. Left out when it doesn't apply. |
| Machine type | Truck | The machine type |
| Code | E | Alarm card |
| Number | 001 | The card number for this site, maker, model, machine type and code |
| Language | -EN | Added to the file names. English is the base language. |
Value tags
Every value on the card is tagged so Technicians and InSkill GPT know how far to trust it:
| Tag | How it looks on the card | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Field value | Grey value in a dashed box | Taken from the source records. Not yet confirmed by the maker. |
| Verified value | White value on solid blue | Taken from the maker's manual, or confirmed by the maker. |
| To confirm | Amber label | Added by the author, not found in the sources. Validate it before anyone relies on it. |
Status, version and review
| Item | In this example | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Field-derived | A new card is always Field-derived. It becomes OEM verified once the maker confirms its values and the To be confirmed list is closed. |
| Version | 0.1 | The first version is 0.1. |
| Review date | 2027-01-29 | No more than 90 days after the card is made. |
| Owner | To be assigned | The person who keeps the card current. |
